The capacity of companies producing semiconductors for 8-inch wafer systems is increasing rapidly.
Market research firm Trend Force announced on 14 October that “14 of the world's major 8-inch semiconductor companies have invested in production lines in recent years, and this investment is gradually being reflected in increased production.”
Previously, ST, Onsemi, Infineon, Wolfspeed, Rohm, Bosch, Fuji Electric, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer International Semiconductor, Silan Microelectronics, UNT and other global system semiconductor companies have announced plans for the construction of 8-inch wafer fabs. 8-inch fabs are located in a wide variety of regions, including Europe, America and Asia. ST announced on 31 May, will cost 5 billion euros in Italy Catania, a new 8-inch wafer fab. The new factory plans to produce up to 15,000 wafers per week, the goal is to achieve mass production in 2026. ST is also working with Sanan Optoelectronics to build an 8-inch wafer fab in Chongqing, China. The Chinese factory is expected to start mass production in the fourth quarter of next year. Onsemi last year expanded the SiC wafer factory in Bucheon City, and plans to shift to the production of 8-inch wafers from next year. ON Semiconductor plans to 8-inch wafer fab capacity to the current capacity of 10 times. Germany's Infineon in August 8 in Malaysia Gulin opened a new 8-inch wafer fab. Will be transformed from 6-inch fab to 8-inch company is also very compelling. Rohm has built a new wafer fab in Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, and plans to switch wafer production from 6-inch to 8-inch by 2025. Switching from 6-inch to 8-inch increases the number of chips that can be produced at one time, thereby reducing production costs. Bosch is also producing 8-inch silicon carbide wafers at its 6-inch facility in Reutlingen, Germany. The company announced plans to produce 8-inch SiC wafers at its Roseville facility in the U.S., which is scheduled for completion in 2026. System Semiconductor has only recently increased its investment in production facilities as supply shortages intensified in the early stages of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in 2020 and 2021. DB HiTek, a leading 8-inch semiconductor company in South Korea, announced on 11 October that it will invest approximately 250 billion won to expand the cleanroom at its Sangwoo fab(Fab 2, Eumseong-gun, North Chungcheong Province) as a pre-emptive response. DB HiTek explained, “System Semiconductor forecasts demand and expands capacity, which can also be interpreted as a sign that the market will grow in the future.”
